All outdoor events are subject to weather conditions and/or date changes. Events will be postponed or cancelled when dangerous conditions or heavy weather are forecasted. For hikes and work days, always wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather conditions and varied terrain. Please bring a map, water and snacks with you. Earth Day Hike

April 22, 5:00 PM      Bald Pate Preserve, Bridgton

Join Loon Echo staff and friends as we make the trek to the rocky summit of Bald Pate to observe Earth Day. Earth Day is an opportunity to celebrate environmental protection efforts worldwide. This is a fun annual event and is kid and pup friendly! New this year, we are asking guests to share an original or favorite poem that embodies the spirit of Earth Day. Sturdy hiking boots or shoes, water and snacks recommended. Approximately 2 hours. Easy to moderate

Trail Work at Pleasant Mountain

April 27, 9:00 AM    (inclement weather date April 20)  Pleasant Mountain Preserve, Denmark

Loon Echo trails are great because of the volunteers that adopt them! Come along with Loon Echo and Maine AMC volunteers as we spruce up the Ledges Trail after the long winter. Clearing drainage, building rock steps and brushing in “social trails” will be on the agenda if conditions allow. Tools and training provided. Appropriate work clothes, pants and boots required, plenty of water and snacks always encouraged. Meet at the Ledges trail head parking area at 8:45 AM. Approximately 6 hours. Strenuous

Vernal Pool Hike

May (date to be determined) 9:00 AM     Raymond Community Forest, Raymond

Raymond Community Forest is at the head of Crescent Lake and acts as an important natural filter for runoff headed to the pristine waters of the lake. There are many wetlands and vernal pools throughout the lower portion of the forest. Vernal pools are an indicator of forest health and are fun to study. Come along with Loon Echo staff as we follow a new trail and go in search of these interesting bodies of water that are home to our favorite “peepers”! Layered clothing, tick repellent, snacks and water are encouraged. Meet at the parking area on Conesca Road in Raymond. Approximately 2 hours. Easy to moderate

National Trails Day

June 1, 9:00 AM           Pleasant Mountain Preserve, Denmark

National Trails Day is an annual event that aims to bring more attention to hiking and biking trails. Ledges Trail at Pleasant Mountain is one of the most popular hiking trails in the State of Maine. With heavy use comes continual maintenance needs. Join LELT staff and learn some basic trail work techniques while exploring new terrain and making new friends! No experience necessary. Appropriate work clothes, sturdy boots, tick repellant, water and snacks are required. Approximately 3 hours Strenuous

Summer Solstice Hike

June 21 5:00 PM      Bald Pate Preserve, Bridgton

Join us for the annual Summer Solstice Hike up the Bob Chase Trail at Bald Pate Mountain.  Meet at the main parking area off of Rt 107 at 5:00 PM. This annual trek has been a Loon Echo tradition for 20 years. It’s a fun way to welcome summer’s arrival and remember one of Loon Echo’s founders, Bob Chase! Feel free to share music, poems or stories that embody the spirit of the day. Sturdy hiking boots or shoes, water and snacks are always encouraged. Approximately 2 hours. Easy to moderate

Partnership Snowshoe

February 23, 9:30 AM (inclement weather date, March 2)   Crooked River Forests, Harrison

Join Loon Echo, Lakes Environmental Association (LEA), Portland Water District (PWD) and Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) staff members for a “partnerships” snowshoe hike along the Crooked River. Guests will have an opportunity to meet with experts that work to protect land and water in the northern Sebago Lake region and discuss the positive impact of their work. The Crooked River Forest at Intervale is a wonderful preserve, offering abundant hunting, fishing and backwoods recreational opportunities. Snowshoes and/or traction devices will be required. Meet at the Intervale Parcel parking area on Scribners Mill Road in Harrison. Layered clothing, water and snacks are encouraged.

Hike for Mental Health

March 9, 9:00 AM     Bald Pate Preserve, Bridgton

Join Loon Echo staff at Bald Pate Mountain to discuss and reflect on how time outside can encourage positive mental health and well-being. This hike is brought to you in partnership with Bring Change 2 Mind, a Lake Region community campaign focused on encouraging conversation to build understanding and acceptance of mental health challenges and substance use disorders. Master Naturalist Leigh Hayes will be on hand to point out all the subtle signs of spring that can be missed in the gray days of March. We hope you will join us to experience or share your own story about the power of nature for positive well-being! Traction devices may be required. Spring Sunrise Hike

March 21, 6:00 AM      Bald Pate Preserve, Bridgton

Get up early and join us to catch the first sunrise of spring from the summit of our beloved Bald Pate Mountain. Meet at the main parking area at 6:00 AM. Snowshoes, or traction devices required. Water, snacks (especially baked goods) and a headlamp are encouraged! Conditions permitting, this is a crowd favorite! In the event of snow or rain, the event will be canceled. Approximately 2 hours.
