Land Protection

Visit our Conservation Easement and Preserve links for descriptions
of our current lands under protection

Loon Echo Land Trust conserves land in three ways:

  • Conservation Easements - Conservation easements are a tool to help land ownersK.A. Spencer 2007 PC Winner03 protect their property while maintaining ownership of their land. The property’s ecological and aesthetic features are protected while most future development rights are relinquished. The easement becomes part of the property’s deed so the property will remain conserved during future ownership. The land trust is responsible for annually monitoring the land to ensure that it is being protected accordingly.
  • Purchase - Loon Echo may decide to purchase special and threatened parcels in the organization’s service area. Those of strategic importance, such as the Pleasant Mountain Preserve, are owned and managed by Loon Echo for public recreation (hunting, hiking, fishing, snowshoeing), resource protection, and/or forest management.

  • Donation/Gift - Generous individuals may choose to donate land or a cash gift to Loon Echo. The Mayberry Hill Preserve in Casco and the Sylvan Woods in Harrison were gifted to Loon Echo. Through the bequest of Helen Allen, Loon Echo maintains an environmental education endowment fund for educational programs in local schools and libraries. Please contact us if you are interested in donating your property or contributing to an endowment fund to support Loon Echo and its conservation mission.
